This one-hour talk will focus on the life of a 19th century American woman whose words and works have changed the world. A lifelong search for health, a desire to help suffering humanity, and love for God led Mary Baker Eddy to discover how Christ Jesus overcame all diseases, discords, and death. She not only became a successful healer but taught others her Christ-based system of spiritual healing, which she denominated Christian Science.
Mary Baker Eddy’s Bible-inspired textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, has been a bestseller since it was first published in 1875.
At a time when women could neither vote nor own property, Mary Baker Eddy founded The First Church of Christ, Scientist, which is headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts, and has branches in 80 countries.
Among her many accomplishments in male-dominated fields, Mary Baker Eddy launched several magazines and was a renowed public speaker, author, preacher, teacher, and healer.
In 1908, Mary Baker Eddy started an international daily newspaper, The Christian Science Monitor, which has since been awarded the Pulitzer Prize for journalism seven times.
In 1992, Science and Health was honored by the Women’s National Book Association. Three years later, its author was admitted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame in Seneca Falls, New York.
While her human accomplishments were unparalleled, the most important legacy Mary Baker Eddy left to the world was a practical understanding of God — and God’s entire creation — as purely spiritual and completely good.
