Christian Science Monitor – You are precious in God’s sight

An article was posted on the Christian Science Monitor website yesterday under A Christian Science Perspective, written by Christy Ellington Henderson titled, You are precious in God’s sight:

“What does it mean to be spiritual?”

At one point, I read everything I could on the topic, as Christian Science describes it, including the Bible and writings by the discoverer of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, including “Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures.” I also read and listened to relevant articles and recordings I found in the Christian Science periodicals. Yet, I felt I couldn’t grasp the concept in a way that felt reliable and demonstrable.

Arriving a day early to a work conference, I spent most of my free time trying to gain clarity on this, to me, ever-foggy spirituality question. I felt inspired, but I still had questions and decided to take a break and go for a jog along the ocean…

Christian Science Monitor – A humble and earnest response to the demand for church

Kim Crooks Korinek published an article on the Christian Science Monitor Website addressing how a rethink of church as founded on the basis of spiritual healing can meet the need of expressing and sharing spirituality in todays world. The article says:

The demand for church is real. Some might agree with that statement. Others emphatically won’t. And yet in spite of declining membership, concerns about youth leaving church, and tragic stories of abuse, there is something else going on. Traditional forms of religious authority are falling away, giving an opening to a radical reexamination and rebirth of church. An article in the Monitor Daily, for instance, speaks to a rise in unconventional outlets for faith and spirituality, such as music festivals.

The podcast guest is Dr. Jeanne Halgren Kilde, Director of the Religious Studies Program at the University of Minnesota.

This episode explores the two edifices of The Mother Church on the Christian Science Plaza in Boston. Guest Dr. Jeanne Kilde discusses how issues around gender in religion influenced design choices for the two buildings. She draws from her prize-winning article “Material Expression and Materialism in Mary Baker Eddy’s Boston Churches: How Architecture and Gender Compromised Mind.” Kilde poses the idea that Mary Baker Eddy’s followers misread the meaning behind an emphasis on God’s feminine nature in the first building. This, she asserts, forced Eddy to revert to a more masculine style for the church’s Extension, built 12 years later.
