Matter seems to be substantial, prevalent—even dominant—sometimes helpful, but also able to affect health in frightening, painful ways. How can it not matter? It’s a fair question. Many find that a more spiritual understanding of substance, as revealed by the Bible-based teachings of Christian Science, has a beneficial effect on health.

Discovered by Mary Baker Eddy in 1866, Christian Science starts with God, divine Mind, to whom belongs all substance. God being eternal, substance must be imperishable. But is substance material? Some dictionaries define matter as physical substance—the opposite of mind or spirit. The substance of a human body is said to be matter, flesh, which can decay or be diseased

[:en]NewgrowthThe Christian Science Sentinel online posted an article by Inge Schmidt titled, A new year and God-directed progress:

At the start of a new year, the promise of a fresh start is palpable. New goals and resolutions for an improved lifestyle take on a renewed impetus. The start of a new year seems to unite us in a common sentiment: the hope of progress.

All too often though, that sense of hopefulness and expectation seems to fade as weeks pass. Resolutions fall by the wayside, and new challenges threaten to erode the tenacity of our hope. When we approach progress as a constant to-do list of self-betterment, gradually checking off things over a course of time, it can start to feel burdensome—even impossible…

[:en]Facing Division? Side With God!The Christian Science Sentinel online posted an article by Barbara Vining titled, Facing division? Side with God!:

Division, whether in a personal relationship or on a much larger scale, is unpleasant, to say the least. It is most often caused by the side-taking that arises (my side against yours) when we allow opinion and human reasoning to motivate us, and it never leads to a harmonious or mutually beneficial solution. Let’s face it, most of us have had experiences along these lines.

But there is a joy-giving alternative to taking sides against one another—one that has a unifying effect in the world, no matter how divisive the situation. As Christian Science teaches, it is to silently and steadfastly side with God, the One who holds us all in eternal union with Him and one another…

[:en]Alexander Grey Nerkgbuudjm UnsplashThe Christian Science Sentinel Online posted an article yesterday by Barbara Fife titled, Seeing “none but the woman”:

There’s a healing recorded in the eighth chapter of the Gospel of John. It’s a well-known account that is often viewed as either a lesson in not judging or condemning others or a healing of sin. A woman had been convicted of adultery, and the scribes and Pharisees were looking for an opportunity to accuse Jesus of not teaching and preaching according to rabbinical law. It was an attack on the very basis of his healing mission.

Although it’s unlikely that most of us would be confronted with a situation such as this, there may have been times when we’ve come face to face with the fear of disease or the harmful action of another, or we’ve felt in the place of the accused. We might feel condemned for a mistake we’ve made, or are feeling guilty for what we haven’t done, and believe we’re not deserving of healing. It’s tempting to search around in the problem. But Jesus didn’t go there. He did not question the woman about her sad history, the whys and wherefores of her situation. Nor did he ask the scribes and Pharisees more about this woman. His calm poise and dominion kept him safe, kept them both safe, kept them all safe…

[:en]Dealing With “doomerism”The Christian Science Sentinel Online posted an article yesterday by Eric Nelson titled, Dealing with “doomerism”:

“All it takes is one person to poke a hole through the bottom of a boat in order for everyone else on board to be affected,” remarked a friend, referring to the impact that the negativity of others can have on our own thoughts and lives. A helpful metaphor, but even more, a great reminder of the importance of keeping our collective boat afloat through a better understanding of the inviolable goodness of God.

This understanding isn’t something that originates in our head. It’s inspired by Christ, God’s spiritual idea communicating to human consciousness, revealing the presence, power, and activity of good in each of us, including our fellow shipmates…

[:en]LoveThe Christian Science Sentinel Online posted a thoughtful article yesterday by Tony Lobl titled, Loving ourselves as our neighbor:

In an unattributed drawing, a young man sits beneath a tree. Hands folded on his knees, he peers into the night sky. Accompanying this simple sketch are these words: “You will never speak to anyone more than you speak to yourself in your head. Be kind to yourself.”

If we echo the young man’s stillness and listen within the silence of our thoughts, we can hear a voice that’s not our own, with a similar message. It’s the Christ, the divine message of God, which Jesus ceaselessly heard as he healed the sick and turned lives from wrongdoing and wrong thinking. The Christ still conveys today a key idea Jesus shared: We must love our neighbor as ourselves. This implies that it’s right to love ourselves…

[:en]Leveling Wealth With HonestyThe Christian Science Sentinel Online posted an article this week by Evan Mehlenbacher titled, Leveling wealth with honesty. The article discusses how wealth is measured:

Mary Baker Eddy had a clear sense of true wealth when she wrote, “Break up cliques, level wealth with honesty, let worth be judged according to wisdom, and we get better views of humanity” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 239). Her instruction to “level wealth with honesty” reveals a moral and spiritual dimension to wealth. As Christian Science explains, real substance, or wealth that endures, is Spirit, God, not matter. “Spirit is the real and eternal; matter is the unreal and temporal” (Science and Health, p. 468). Real wealth is spiritual. It lasts forever. It’s not based in material things, all of which have an expiration date, but in spiritual substance—in things such as love, generosity, goodness, and Spirit-based health and happiness—which is ever present to bless, inspire, and enrich. When we honestly accept a spiritual sense of what constitutes real wealth, we can find and experience it, whether we have money or not…

[:en]A New Birth After Hard TimesThe Christian Science Sentinel Online posted an article this week by John Quincy Adams III titled, A new birth after hard times. The article discusses overcoming life’s challenges:

Needing to start anew after one or more of life’s most challenging circumstances, or for any reason, is something many of us have faced. Climbing out of a dark place or picking up the pieces of hearts and lives can seem daunting. But embracing the promise of restoration and healing that a new birth offers can make all the difference.

At its core, the new birth is a deep spiritualization of thought that permeates one’s life. It’s a humble yielding to Spirit, God, and letting oneself be made new. An article titled “The New Birth” written by Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer of Christian Science, describes this spiritual transformation: “The new birth is not the work of a moment. It begins with moments, and goes on with years; moments of surrender to God, of childlike trust and joyful adoption of good; moments of self-abnegation, self-consecration, heaven-born hope, and spiritual love” (Miscellaneous Writings 1883–1896, p. 15)…

Occasionally, we hear the word discoverable, referring, for instance, to making things easier to find online or to a lawyer’s right to gain access to documents. More broadly, it simply means something can be discovered. “Eureka!” moments are scientists discovering the discoverable.

In particular, Christian Science is the discovery of spiritual truths that have been discoverable forever. The Bible records the Hebrew fore-fathers, who lived thousands of years ago, proving something of the Science of Christ—the understanding of the universal, spiritual Principle that is God. Later, Jesus’ healings of others, and his own resurrection, proved the dependable, all-governing nature of this original and eternal Principle. Yet the “rule for demonstrating this Principle of healing and preventing disease . . . remained to be discovered in Christian Science,” announced the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures (p. 147 )…
