Nature TreeThe Christian Science Sentinel online posted an article this week written by James Walter titled, “The inward voice”:

There is an inward voice that guides, encourages, comforts, instructs, enlightens, and strengthens us—and we are all able to hear it. It’s with us all the time. It’s there as we plan our day. It’s there when decisions are made. It’s there in idle moments or busiest times. Many would contend that this voice is our own—what we call our conscience or intuition. But where does this voice actually originate and how do we know to follow it? Does it proceed from a material brain or a personal mind—either of which would be limited in capability and perception—or does it come from a higher, unerring source? These are critical questions for each of us, because the answers shape our perception of ourselves and others and influence our every decision and action…

Dive Into PrayerAn article was posted on the Christian Science Monitor website last week, under A Christian Science Perspective by Ovidio Trentini titled, Dive into prayer:

On summer days of intense heat, it is very easy to want to jump into a pool or a lake for a cool dip. A friend from Germany, a former lifeguard, told me that he and his son are always looking for a place to go swimming. He knows the art of diving into inviting waters very well.

He commented that when we enter the water, it occupies all the space around us, and we feel joy and happiness and a sense of well-being.

This friend is very focused on spiritual things, and, swept forward by the theme of our conversation, he commented that diving into water and being totally surrounded by it is like taking a deep dive in prayer to feel conscious of God’s presence…

WeatherAn article was posted on the Christian Science Monitor website last week, under A Christian Science Perspective by Andrea Ward titled, Weather is not my god:

It has become so commonplace in social situations to talk about the weather as an ice breaker or as a way to change the topic when someone feels uncomfortable or doesn’t know what to say.

Thoughts about weather can be subtle mental whispers, such as “I’m too hot” (or too cold). Or they can become loud “voices” in the physical form of floods, hurricanes, or tornados. How we think about weather can sharply affect our experiences. Are we letting weather dictate what we say, what we do, or even how we feel? I’ve found it important to ask myself, “Have I let weather become a personal god?”

Lilies Of The ValleyThe Christian Science Sentinel online posted an article by Diahana Barnes titled, Overcoming depression with God’s love:

There was a time in my life when I experienced a deep depression. There were days when I didn’t want to get out of bed and completely lacked motivation. It was a dark sadness that seemed to be sucking me under. I was not my usual self.

Desperate to feel happy again, I decided to turn to God for help through prayer. Using a foundational truth of Christian Science—that all is created and governed by the Divine, God, Love—I began to pray deeply. With support from teachings in the Bible and its companion textbook called Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, I started to deepen my spiritual understanding of God and my relationship to our source…

Matter Doesnt MatterThe Christian Science Sentinel online posted an article by Moji George titled, Matter doesn’t matter:

Matter seems to be substantial, prevalent—even dominant—sometimes helpful, but also able to affect health in frightening, painful ways. How can it not matter? It’s a fair question. Many find that a more spiritual understanding of substance, as revealed by the Bible-based teachings of Christian Science, has a beneficial effect on health.

Discovered by Mary Baker Eddy in 1866, Christian Science starts with God, divine Mind, to whom belongs all substance. God being eternal, substance must be imperishable. But is substance material? Some dictionaries define matter as physical substance—the opposite of mind or spirit. The substance of a human body is said to be matter, flesh, which can decay or be diseased

Facing Division? Side With God!The Christian Science Sentinel online posted an article by Barbara Vining titled, Facing division? Side with God!:

Division, whether in a personal relationship or on a much larger scale, is unpleasant, to say the least. It is most often caused by the side-taking that arises (my side against yours) when we allow opinion and human reasoning to motivate us, and it never leads to a harmonious or mutually beneficial solution. Let’s face it, most of us have had experiences along these lines.

But there is a joy-giving alternative to taking sides against one another—one that has a unifying effect in the world, no matter how divisive the situation. As Christian Science teaches, it is to silently and steadfastly side with God, the One who holds us all in eternal union with Him and one another…

Kathleen Mitchener shared an article this week on the Christian Science Sentinel website titled, Dispelling destructive forces. The article focuses on  prayer during extreme weather:

Each year, hurricane season is seen as running from June through November, with September generally anticipated as the most destructive month. Yet, prayer based on an understanding of the all-power of God can help us find a sense of calm in any situation—and experience it.

Growing up and living in an area of high tornado activity in the Midwestern United States, as well as serving in hurricane territory in the Peace Corps, I have had opportunities over the past several years to see firsthand the power of God to bring calm and safety despite the threat of storms…
