Almost forty years ago, I came to a crossroads in my life. I had graduated from university and was looking for employment, but the search had been disappointing and unfruitful.

I was living in Toronto, working as a waitress and taking acting classes. I discovered that I had a talent for improvisation, and sketch comedy was very popular at that time. The acting coach I studied with encouraged me to pursue my talent but also suggested that I get vocal training. He connected me with a vocal coach, and soon I was taking weekly classes…

The poem “ ‘Feed My Sheep’ ” by Mary Baker Eddy (Poems, p. 14), the Discoverer of Christian Science, is based on Jesus’ instruction to his disciple Peter. Its three touching verses, set to music in the very first Christian Science Hymnal in 1892, carry a deep message for all of Jesus’ followers, assuring us of our divine Shepherd’s guiding hand through three perspectives: me, we, and them. The poem begins, “Shepherd, show me how to go,” moves to “We would enter by the door” in verse two, and ends with “Shepherd, wash them clean.”…

a small town hardware store;

treasure trove to plumb.

Once in one, I stood nestled
in shovels and screws, oblivious
of the sacred moment waiting in
the midst of the unremarkable; a

Does it proceed from a material brain or a personal mind—either of which would be limited in capability and perception—or does it come from a higher, unerring source? These are critical questions for each of us, because the answers shape our perception of ourselves and others and influence our every decision and action…
