Every three years since 1907, the Board of Education, an auxiliary to the Massachusetts Metaphysical College, has held a Normal class to train and authorize qualified practitioners of Christian Science healing to take on the additional responsibility of teaching this healing practice to others. We’re grateful to announce that a dedicated new group of teachers has now completed the 2021 Normal class, which was held in early December in the Boston area.

Margaret Rogers, CSB, of Berkeley, California, taught the class. Christian Science and community service were strong influences in Margaret’s home growing up. In college she became convinced that the best way to accomplish lasting justice and healing was to spiritualize thought and life in the way Christ Jesus taught. After graduating from the University of California, Berkeley, she trained as a Christian Science nurse, learning that healing involved love and commitment to spiritual growth. After several years nursing, she entered the full-time practice of Christian Science and then served as a lecturer and writer for Church periodicals. Since becoming a teacher of Christian Science in 1991, Margaret has filled various roles at The Mother Church, including Second Reader, Associate Editor of The Christian Science Journal, and member of the Christian Science Board of Directors. Hearken is not a word you come across in daily speech or conversation. It sounds old-fashioned. In fact, the first time I ever used it was in elementary school, when we sang the traditional English refrain of an old Neapolitan song: “Hearken, hearken, music sounds afar! Funiculi, funicula, funiculi, funicula. . . .”

But as I started being a serious student of Christian Science, I noticed that hearken comes up a lot in the Bible, at least in the King James Version. In fact, it appears 233 times (in various forms). So it must be important, I reasoned. It had to mean more than just “hear,” because it says in Isaiah, “The ears of them that hear shall hearken” (32:3). When I looked up hearken in my dictionary, I found: “To listen, hear, and heed.” In today’s vernacular, it would probably be “Listen up!” or “Pay attention!”

In Scripture, hearken is often used as an admonition to not only listen and hear, but heed God’s voice—or that of His messengers. The Old Testament records how Moses was told by God that he should go to the children of Israel and tell them he was chosen to lead them out of slavery in Egypt. He responded, “They will not believe me, nor hearken unto my voice” (Exodus 4:1). The Lord then gave Moses two signs of His omnipotent power that he should show the people: (1) Following the Lord’s instructions, he threw his rod (walking stick) on the ground and it became a serpent; then, he picked the serpent up by the tail and it became a rod again. (2) Directed to then put his hand in his bosom, once again Moses obeyed, and his hand turned leprous; repeating the motion, the leprosy vanished. The man replied, “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself” (Luke 10:27). It seems as if not a day goes by now without news reports of evil spreading in forms such as contagion, hatred, corruption, abuse, mass killings, or terrorism, leaving many people feeling helpless. At the same time, however, we are seeing, worldwide, more people praying together for health, peace, justice, and freedom. But too often the picture does not look hopeful.

Perhaps this is because the tendency is to define evil based on what we see and hear, such as TV images of violence or reports of disease, and then we attach evil to certain individuals, causing a division when people start pointing a finger at each other. But the real enemy is not who or what the physical senses perceive, but what is behind it—the mental state. In order to subdue the effect of evil and prove it powerless to destroy good, we must understand the aggressively deceptive nature of evil…

I’m continually surprised by how much I still struggle with this question. For the most part I’m not aware of being concerned about what others think of me, and then, bang—something comes up that makes me question my goodness, adequacy, or ability, and I find that there’s still more egotism there than I realized.

But I can tell I am making progress, because these days I find myself actually grateful for those wake-up moments, even though they’re uncomfortable. I see them as opportunities to keep surrendering to how God sees me, to rest secure in the steady approval that God has for all of Her children, to realize that this is what really matters most, and to experience the tangible benefits of this realization…

Have you ever wondered what it would have been like to have met Christ Jesus or to have been able to go to him for healing?

How would we approach this holiest of all men, the Son of God? Tentatively perhaps, not knowing quite what to expect—unsure of what might be required of us by the gospel he was proclaiming. Or we might see ourselves as coming to the Master with a bright sense of hope that not only would our bodies be restored but our thinking and our lives would also be touched by his healing prayer. Still others of us might imagine what unutterable humility we would feel in the presence of his spirituality, what a distance we would sense between our own meager expression of goodness and the sheer radiance of his light and love…

"ConsistencyDeWitt John wrote an article originally published in June 1982 that was recently shared again on the Christian Science Journal website titled, Consistency in healing practice. The article focuses on the consistencies seen through Christian Science and is worth a read:

One of the outstanding characteristics of Christian Science is its consistency—in metaphysical teachings, method of practice, and ethical standard. This consistency rests on unqualified acceptance of the omnipotence and goodness of God, divine Principle, as the only creator and source of man’s being.

To illustrate: If we start with the foundational truth that God, the creator of all that exists, is infinite Mind, this leads in Science to the logical conclusion that all that really is created is Mind’s manifestation, and hence divinely mental. And from the basic fact that the all-creating God is Spirit, not matter, flows the conclusion that all is in reality spiritual, not material…
