Do you feel close to God? Whatever level of connection we feel, we would probably like to find a greater sense of nearness—to more consistently know His presence, hear His response to our prayers, and rest in His comfort. How can we experience God in our lives more dependably and tangibly?

The Bible says, “The Lord your God is with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:9, New Living Translation). Accepting and embracing this powerful promise inspires and encourages us. It may seem too good to be true to expect God to be present in a way that is practical and applicable to our circumstances. But as Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer of Christian Science, wrote to a student: “All things are prepared for us by the Father. Our part is to prepare ourselves to receive them” (Mary Baker Eddy to Sue Ella Bradshaw, February 24, 1890; L04643, The Mary Baker Eddy Library; © The Mary Baker Eddy Collection). This spiritual preparation is possible anytime, anywhere, and the blessings flowing from our efforts are infinite…

In the Manual of The Mother Church, Mary Baker Eddy writes, “Law constitutes government, and disobedience to the laws of The Mother Church must ultimate in annulling its Tenets and By-Laws” (p. 28). 

I love the whole concept of law, especially when lifted spiritually to the understanding of law as divine Science, the Holy Ghost, the universal action of God that establishes and maintains the harmony, or structure, of infinite being. Perhaps that’s why I deeply love the Manual, an astonishingly original legal document that lays out the structure of the human expression of “the Church Universal and Triumphant” (Manual, p. 19)…

“What is termed material sense can report only a mortal temporary sense of things, whereas spiritual sense can bear witness only to Truth. To material sense, the unreal is the real until this sense is corrected by Christian Science. Spiritual sense, contradicting the material senses, involves intuition, hope, faith, understanding, fruition, reality.”

Effective prayer is more than thinking good thoughts, or begging a far-off God to intervene. It is a recognition of the transforming power of God’s law in our lives. Jesus provided strong examples of what prayer can do, and expected his followers for centuries to come to do the same. He defied material laws by obeying spiritual laws – laws that define God as Love and God’s loving government of us. We can follow Jesus’ example confidently by striving to understand these laws and put them into practice.

In celebration of the recent 150th anniversary of the publication of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, a textbook beloved by my family for many generations, I am inspired to share the following story.

It’s the story of a woman from Mrs. Eddy’s era whose discovery of this textbook had a profound impact on our family. This woman ran a boarding house sometime between 1900 and 1910. A sixteen-year-old girl asked to rent one of the rooms and soon got a job to pay for it. The young girl’s name was Pearl, and she was my grandmother. As my grandmother told it, she had lost her father and mother when only twelve years old, and she and her younger siblings were each sent off to live with relatives, separating the family…
