Effective prayer is more than thinking good thoughts, or begging a far-off God to intervene. It is a recognition of the transforming power of God’s law in our lives. Jesus provided strong examples of what prayer can do, and expected his followers for centuries to come to do the same. He defied material laws by obeying spiritual laws – laws that define God as Love and God’s loving government of us. We can follow Jesus’ example confidently by striving to understand these laws and put them into practice.

In celebration of the recent 150th anniversary of the publication of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, a textbook beloved by my family for many generations, I am inspired to share the following story.

It’s the story of a woman from Mrs. Eddy’s era whose discovery of this textbook had a profound impact on our family. This woman ran a boarding house sometime between 1900 and 1910. A sixteen-year-old girl asked to rent one of the rooms and soon got a job to pay for it. The young girl’s name was Pearl, and she was my grandmother. As my grandmother told it, she had lost her father and mother when only twelve years old, and she and her younger siblings were each sent off to live with relatives, separating the family…

Truthfulness is a valuable quality; upholding truth in our words and actions is certainly laudable. Throughout the Bible, truth is associated with God. Deuteronomy, for instance, speaks of God as “a God of truth” (32:4). A God of truth is naturally the source of all truth, of all that is legitimate, good, and real. And these adjectives describe the very nature of God—of Truth itself.

Clearly, anything that is erroneous or untruthful cannot originate in divine Truth. Mary Baker Eddy explains, “That God is Truth, the Scriptures aver; that Truth never created error, or such a capacity, is self-evident; that God made all that was made, is again Scriptural” (Miscellaneous Writings 1883–1896, pp. 49–50)…
