It’s Crucial to challenge the world’s common perception that disease is an inevitable part of one’s experience. Because God is Love and Truth, as the Bible tells us, He could never sanction the unloveliness and pain of disease. 

Christian Science explains that everything we see, including disease, is a mental phenomenon, or thought objectified. To the human mind, it is a radical notion that what appears as disease is, actually, thought. But the fact that Christian Science proves disease to be erroneous thought objectified on the body opens up new possibilities of understanding and healing. This thought-provoking perspective encourages us to explore the power of divinely bestowed thought to shape our well-being. It raises the question: Can we truly change matter-based thoughts of disease, lack, or fear and accept the spiritual conviction of God’s omnipotence and omnipresence?

Have you ever thought about an everlasting life? Most religious creeds teach eternal life as the gift received in heaven, the kingdom of God, after one’s death. But according to Christian Scripture, Christ Jesus himself said, “If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death” (John 8:51), and “The kingdom of God is within you” (Luke 17:21). How is one to understand and experience what he meant?

One of the distinctive and prominent points Jesus made in his teaching and healing practice was to always see God as “our Father” (see, for example, the Lord’s Prayer, at Matthew 6:9). The Bible implies that God was a tangible, loving, all-knowing, and all-powerful presence to Jesus. In everything Jesus said and did, he gave credit to his Father. His fundamental understanding of God and of his relationship to this Father was the basis of his healing ministry…

The Book of Acts records that after the stoning of Stephen, who was one of the early Christians, a great persecution arose against the young Christian church in Jerusalem, and most believers scattered throughout the region, fleeing for their lives (see Acts 8:1).

Regardless of this crisis, Acts continues with accounts of these followers of Christ Jesus sharing their new faith, making new disciples, and sowing the seeds of new churches wherever they went. What in many ways must have felt like a daunting situation—fleeing the familiar and heading into the unknown—was, in fact, a step in an extraordinary expansion of the church that gave Christianity a foothold across the entire Roman Empire.

What can we learn today from these early Christians? Can modern-day challenges to Christian Science branch churches become catalysts for expansion?

“What does it mean to be spiritual?”

At one point, I read everything I could on the topic, as Christian Science describes it, including the Bible and writings by the discoverer of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, including “Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures.” I also read and listened to relevant articles and recordings I found in the Christian Science periodicals. Yet, I felt I couldn’t grasp the concept in a way that felt reliable and demonstrable.

Arriving a day early to a work conference, I spent most of my free time trying to gain clarity on this, to me, ever-foggy spirituality question. I felt inspired, but I still had questions and decided to take a break and go for a jog along the ocean…
